Slightly sweet, slightly tart, this Skinny Blood Orange Margarita is a refreshing cocktail to enjoy outside on a beautiful day. You’ll love that these margaritas contain fewer carbs and sugar than a traditional margarita made with bottled sour mix.
When I was at Trader Joe’s earlier in the week, they had bags of blood oranges in the produce section. You know I couldn’t pass those gems up. The juice from the blood oranges is the perfect addition to these margaritas. Plus, it makes them a beautiful color.
I do have to admit that I am usually more of a wine girl, but I thoroughly enjoyed taste testing these Skinny Blood Orange Margaritas. This recipe would also scale up beautifully to create a pitcher of margaritas for your next party.

FAQs:
Short answer, no. BUT, I feel like they are too tart without adding a touch of sweetener. I added one teaspoon of agave nectar to my margarita and thought it was perfect. On the other hand, Russ preferred his a bit sweeter. My recommendation would be to start with about a teaspoon of agave nectar, then stir in a bit more if you’d like a little more sweetness.
No, but I believe it definitely improves the flavor. If you have to use bottled juice, opt for juices that have no additives. My goal with these margaritas was to reduce the carbs and added sugars (particularly those in bottled sour mixes) without sacrificing taste.
Ingredients for Blood Orange Margaritas:
- Tequila: I used Cuervo 1800 silver.
- Lime juice: Use fresh squeezed for the best flavor.
- Blood orange juice: Use fresh squeezed for the best flavor.
- Agave nectar: Balances the tart flavor.
- Sparkling water: Keeps the margaritas "skinny."
How to Prepare Skinny Blood Orange Margaritas:
Preparation for these margaritas is simple.
- Cut the oranges and limes in half. If not using a juicer, squeeze each half over a small strainer that is set over a cup or bowl in order to catch any seeds.
- Fill a 10-ounce glass with ice, then measure 1 ½ ounces tequila into the glass. Add 1 ½ ounces lime juice, 1 ounce orange juice, and 1 teaspoon agave nectar. Fill the glass with 3-4 ounces sparkling water.
- Turn the glass and contents over into a cocktail shaker, cover, and shake a few times. Use a lime wedge to rim the glass, then dip into the margarita salt (if using). Pour the contents from the shaker back into the salt rimmed glass, and garnish with a lime and orange wheel, if desired.

140 calories is not bad for a margarita! I love to drink them but don't want all the sugar. Thanks for sharing your recipe!
Inspired Fresh Life
I agree with you, Sue! That's why I wanted to create a version that doesn't add all the extra sugars found in mixers.
