This twist on a classic Hot Toddy really elevates the flavor game. Traditionally, a Hot Toddy is simply hot water, honey, a squeeze of lemon, and whiskey. While I do enjoy the classic, my Spiced Hot Toddy is infused with cinnamon and star anise. Talk about a flavor boost that takes this cocktail to the next level! I know my cold weather friends are going to want to try this Spiced Hot Toddy.
I was first introduced to a Hot Toddy in my early twenties while at a bar with some friends. I had a cold, and nothing really sounded good to drink. Yes, I should have been at home in bed, but I was in my twenties, remember? Anyway, the bartender suggested a Hot Toddy. I still remember how the lemon and honey soothed my throat, and the whiskey definitely warmed me up.
These days, I would listen to my body, and stay home and get some rest. But, I would still enjoy this Spiced Hot Toddy snuggled up with a blanket on the couch. If you don’t imbibe, you could skip the whiskey and still enjoy the warming spices and honey. Not gonna lie though, I like a little nip of Jameson in mine. However, feel free to use your favorite whiskey.
PREPARE SPICED HOT TODDY:
Bring 3 cups water with 3 star anise, 2 cinnamon sticks, and the slices of half a lemon to a boil. Once the water reaches a full boil, turn the burner to simmer, and let steep for about 10 minutes.
Meanwhile, add a shot of whiskey and a teaspoon of honey to each mug. Once the spices have steeped, fill each mug half way with water. Stir to melt the honey, then fill the rest of the way. Garnish with a lemon wheel, if desired.
Note: These directions are for two servings. Simply adjust the proportions for the amount of servings needed.
