These Homemade Filled Chocolates are super easy to make and are the perfect homemade gift for any occasion. The filling options are only limited by your imagination.
While these filled chocolates do take some time to make from start to finish, they are really easy with no stovetop heating required. That’s right, you can melt the chocolate right in your microwave. Told you it was easy peasy. If fact, this would be a fun project to do with kids who’d like to create their own homemade gifts.
The fun part about making your own filled chocolates is that you can find all kinds of silicone molds to make different shapes, sizes, and designs. For this recipe, I made simple cubes, but I added a white chocolate drizzle to dress them up a bit.
I chose to use three different fillings: caramel, macadamia nuts, and marshmallow coconut. You can do the same, or go with all of one filling. You will need to adjust the measurements if you decide to just use one of the fillings. I’ve also included a list of other filling ideas if you’d like to try something different.
Once you see how easy these Homemade Filled Chocolates are, you’re going to make them for everyone. They’re a perfect sweet gift, and you have full control over the quality of ingredients. You might want to make a double batch to keep some for yourself.
FAQS:
It helps it to melt smoothly and provides a nice shine. You really can’t taste the coconut oil in the melted chocolate.
Use the best quality chocolate you can. I buy high quality dark chocolate bars, and break them apart. You can also use melting discs if you would like. The key is a chocolate with a good amount of cocoa butter so that the chocolate melts smoothly and doesn’t streak when hardened.
You can use any molds you like. I find that silicone molds work best for a smooth finish and easy release of the chocolate. You also don’t have to spray the silicone molds.
HOW TO MAKE FILLED CHOCOLATES:
- Begin by melting your chocolate in a large microwave safe bowl. Simply add the chocolate to the bowl (break apart if using bars) with the coconut oil, and microwave for 40 seconds. Remove the bowl and stir the chocolate. Return to the microwave for 40 more seconds. Carefully, remove and stir once again until chocolate is smooth.
- Fill each each mold about a ⅓ full, and place in the freezer for about 2 minutes to thicken the chocolate. Remove the tray and tilt to coat all sides of each cube. Return to the freezer until the chocolate is set, about 2-4 more minutes.
- Meanwhile, prepare your filling(s):
- Melt the coconut, mini marshmallows, and coconut oil in the microwave for 20 seconds. Stir to combine ingredients. Use a small spoon to fill each cube, leaving enough room to top with more chocolate.
- Melt the caramel bits and half and half for about 30 seconds in the microwave. Stir to combine ingredients until smooth. Use a small spoon to fill each cube, leaving enough room to top with more chocolate.
- Add 1-2 macadamias to each cube depending on the size of your nuts. Leave enough room to top with more chocolate.
- Once you have added your filling, fill the cubes with the remaining melted chocolate. Use the back of a spoon or a spatula to scape the top of the mold to ensure the chocolate is smooth and flat.
- Place the trays back in the freezer for about an hour until the chocolate is completely set. Remove the trays, and let set at room temperature for about five minutes. Turn the trays over a large cutting board, pressing lightly on the bottom of the silicone mold to pop out the chocolates.
- To make the optional white chocolate drizzle: Melt ¼ cup white chocolate chips with ½ teaspoon coconut oil for about 30 seconds in the microwave. Stir thoroughly until smooth. Use a small spoon to drizzle the white chocolate over the filled chocolates. Place in the fridge to set the white chocolate, about 30 minutes.
- Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to a week.
FILLING SUGGESTIONS:
- Marshmallow and coconut flakes—Melt ½ cup mini marshmallows, ¼ cup unsweetened coconut flakes, and 1 teaspoon coconut oil. Mix to combine well.
- Caramel—Melt ⅓ cup caramel bits with 1 teaspoon ½ half half. Stir until smooth.
- Peanut butter—To make the peanut butter extra decadent, melt ½ cup peanut butter with 2 tablespoons powdered sugar, and mix together well. Place in the fridge until it firms up.
- Nuts—I like macadamia nuts, but you could use any nuts you like.
- Dried or candied fruit
